P5 Strikers takes place in an awkward area of the continuity, a half-year after the conclusion of the prior game. The story however does fall off of the precarious skyscraper-sized rickety and glued together ladder of expectation that the first game sets up, almost exclusively because it tries to add to the games canon itself. There are so many aspects of the game which have a surprising amount of polish. If Persona 5 Strikers had been billed solely as a spinoff, then many of the forthcoming criticism’s I am about to levy against it would be forgivable. It would be hard enough to add a foot note to it, let alone an entire separate game. When you take a narrative, so thorough in its smaller moments, atmosphere, and complete in it’s messy growth and resolution, adding anything else to that experience is an almost sisyphean task. The tropes that are liberally sprinkled and the overarching story beat that guides the experience were not news to the player, but the game’s journey gingerly carries its destination on its back. The positives of the experience certainly outweigh the negatives. Persona 5 was truly all of its mechanics and narrative beats, mixing together into an experience, while not always clean, had distinct chunks of masterclass design, because *and* in spite of the magnanimous amount of systems in place. The mileage of the experience heavily varied depending on your predisposition to interplay and subversion of tried and true JRPG tropes, along with the coveted milkshake viscosity blend of dating/life sim elements into the experience.

They were rough at times but the coatings applied to the story, redundant as they may have been, created a texturally diverse chronicle of a year in the life for highly stylized and designed moody and goofy teens with a shocking lack of deductive reasoning.

All the narrative strokes that glazed the experience are not wasted.

It was messy, it was rich, and most importantly it was the full meal. The original Persona 5 was not a present, it was a full bodied and cheesecake-factory sized steak and potato stack of a japanese roleplaying game so fresh and off the grill its juices soaked the packaging of the giftbox. That present, so carefully and artinsinally constructed by its creators, is complete in it’s presentation and delivery. If you assume that a good story has been told, wrapped up and mindfully tied in a tasteful bow, the necessity for a continuation is questionable. Sequels are a real bitch bastard of a story-telling effort.
